For many Americans, the choice to own a firearm is directly tied to their personal freedom. The majority of gun owners across the nation own more than one firearm. As a gun owner, it is important to familiarize yourself with the basic parts of a firearm in order to utilize the firearm properly, and safely. Of course, different types of firearms may have varying components, but there are three basic parts of a firearm that we will concentrate on below.
The Basic Parts of a Firearm
The three basic parts of a firearm are:
- Action: This part of the piece loads the gun, fires (triggers) the gun, and dispels the ammunition. It is really the “guts” of the gun, and includes all of the moving parts needed to eject the shells/cartridges.
- Barrel: This metal tube is used for the bullet to pass through. When the bullet is fired, it is forced down this area of the gun, and out the end. This happens because of expanding gases.
- Stock: This area of the firearm supports the action and barrel portions, and more simply called the handle. It is broken down into two sections: the butt and fore-end.
All of the above firearm components work cohesively and result in the bullet being fired from the gun after the trigger is pulled. In order to keep the firearm functioning to the best of its ability, all parts of the firearm should be cleaned regularly. The firearm must be unloaded during the cleaning process to ensure safety.
Before purchasing a gun, make sure that you are familiar with how they work, and the responsibilities that come along with owning the device. While it may seem like an easy item to acquire, it also comes with a lot of responsibility. Becoming a responsible gun owner is about becoming familiar with guns, keeping the gun secure, and keeping yourself and those around you safe from any accidents that could occur.
